What is the Gospel?
Sin is weighty, it can be overwhelming to the point where you may feel like it’s impossible to overcome. The Good news is that God knows that. He knew that we could not possibly pay the price of our sin; he knows that our human nature does not have the power to defeat sin. But he loves us so much, and he has such compassion for us that he decided to foot the bill for us. He decided that he would take on sin so that we would not have to.
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23
Sin entered the world when Adam and Eve chose rebellion over obedience, when they thought they knew more than God and were bigger than the program. They chose not to follow his law and they fell from grace, taking all of humanity with them. Jesus the Christ [the chosen one, the Messiah] is known as the last Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45) because just as we are like the man made from dust, we will also be like the man from heaven (1 Corinthians 15:49). Humanity was separated from God, but that relationship would be restored. Jesus was innocent, he was a man without sin and just like he took the place of Barabbas [the guilty], he takes the place of each one of us [the sinful], that we may be set free (Luke 23:25).
The gospel is simple: the spirit of God came to Earth; he made himself flesh through Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus, who was without sin, died for the sin of the world. The wages of sin are death, and Christ paid that price for us. However, Jesus, through the power of God, conquered death and rose again on the third day. God never wanted to condemn us or judge us, he holds such love for us that he sacrificed himself so that we may live in eternity with him (John 3:17).
Through the belief of Jesus the Christ as our Lord and Savior and his resurrection, we have faith that we will be made new through the grace of God as we turn from and repent for our sins. It has been forgiven because the price has already been paid, you need only believe to receive the redemption that comes from God.
